Author bio

Sheila Roberts was born in Seattle and has spent much of her career writing toward the places and people she knows best, women trying to keep family, work, friendship and hope moving in the right direction. Her books live in the overlap between romance and women's fiction, and many of them carry a strong Pacific Northwest feeling. Even when the story heads to the beach or leans hard into Christmas, it still feels rooted in everyday life.

Her road to writing was not especially tidy, which suits her fiction just fine.

Before books took over, she played in a band, owned a singing telegram company and wrote songs. That mix of humor, performance and hustle shows up all over her work. She began publishing in 1989 under the name Sheila Rabe, writing historical and contemporary romance before building a second career under her own name.

Once she shifted into contemporary stories as Sheila Roberts, she found the lane many readers now know her for, warm, funny books about ordinary people in the middle of very unglamorous messes. On Strike for Christmas turned holiday frustration into comedy. Bikini Season and Better Than Chocolate mixed friendship, body-image worries, family business trouble and small-town romance. She has a knack for making familiar problems feel important without making them heavy.

She likes women who are practical, a little frazzled, and tougher than they first appear.

That shows up again in books like Love in Bloom, where self-doubt tangles with romance, and Welcome to Moonlight Harbor, where a divorce becomes the start of a new life at a beach-town inn. Then there is The Nine Lives of Christmas, one of her best-known titles, which pairs a guarded firefighter, a veterinary student and a cat with very good instincts. Readers tend to come to Roberts for the same reasons they come back, community, humor, second chances, and endings that feel earned.

Her fiction returns again and again to a few favorite pressures, family expectations, money trouble, starting over, grief that softens slowly, and holidays that refuse to stay simple. Small towns matter in these books, not just as postcard settings but as places where everybody knows enough about everybody else to help, meddle or both. Chocolate, Christmas lights, coastal weather and local businesses all get their turn, too.

The numbers tell their own story. Roberts has sold more than three million books, and several novels have been adapted for the screen, including On Strike for Christmas, The Nine Lives of Christmas and Christmas on Candy Cane Lane. But the appeal is still personal. Her readers are not usually chasing high drama. They are looking for the pleasure of spending time with characters who feel familiar, flawed and worth rooting for.

These days she divides her time between Washington State and California. She still enjoys songwriting, still speaks to women's groups, and still writes the kinds of stories built around family, friends and a little romantic chaos. She is a good writer to reach for when you want comfort with some comic bite.
