1997

Series background & context

The Seth Sessions series gathers verbatim transcripts from the sittings where Jane Roberts spoke for the personality known as Seth. Instead of polished essays, these books show the material as it first arrived in a small Elmira apartment.

The earliest sessions began in 1963, when Jane and her husband, artist Robert Butts, treated the experiments as a private adventure in consciousness. Seth answered questions about dreams, reincarnation, the inner self, and the way thoughts become events, while also commenting on whatever was going on in the couple's lives.

As interest grew, Jane opened an evening ESP class that met in their living room. Students from many backgrounds came to watch the sessions, practice simple exercises, and talk openly about psychic experiences, fears, and hopes. The lively back and forth in those classes is preserved in the Early Class Sessions volumes.

The Early Sessions books record the first years of Seth's dictation for Jane and Rob alone, long before there were public Seth titles on bookstore shelves. They trace how key ideas like reality creation, inner senses, and probable selves unfolded gradually as everyone involved learned how to work with the process.

The Personal Sessions volumes are more intimate. They contain material that was originally left out of the main books because it focused on Jane and Rob's health concerns, finances, creative doubts, and day to day problems. In these transcripts Seth applies the same principles to the very ordinary issues that any family faces.

Taken together, the class transcripts, personal sittings, and early experimental sessions let readers watch the Seth material grow from a curious experiment into a long running conversation about what it means to be human.

On this page the Seth Sessions entries are organized by date and focus so you can follow the chronology or dip into the periods that match your own questions. They are best read slowly, as if you had pulled up a chair in that living room and joined the circle yourself.
