Jaime Lee Moyer was born in Los Angeles and grew up around the San Francisco Bay Area, a region that later gave her first novels their setting and atmosphere. Her work moves easily between historical fantasy, mystery, folklore, romance, and the unsettling business of ghosts who refuse to stay quiet.

She started young. Moyer wrote her first finished story at eleven, and by twelve she was already sure she wanted to write the kinds of stories she had trouble finding on library shelves, especially stories centered on women with choices, anger, courage, and lives of their own.

Writing was never just a side interest for her. She worked around a day job, kept writing, and built a career in poetry and short fiction before publishing novels. Her short work appeared in speculative-fiction venues, and she also served as poetry editor for Ideomancer for five years.

She had a strong connection to the poetry community. Moyer edited the 2010 Rhysling Anthology for the Science Fiction Poetry Association, and her own poems appeared in several genre publications. That background shows in the close attention she gave to mood, place, memory, and the emotional weight of a strange encounter.

Her debut novel, Delia's Shadow, won the Columbus Literary Award for Fiction before its publication in 2013. It introduces Delia Martin, a San Francisco woman who sees ghosts, and Gabe Ryan, a police detective investigating murders tied to the city's past. The book became the start of a three-volume historical fantasy mystery sequence, followed by A Barricade in Hell and Against a Brightening Sky.

San Francisco matters deeply in those books. Moyer set the series after the 1906 earthquake and fire, when the city was rebuilding and carrying its losses with it. Delia's gift makes those losses visible. Readers who enjoy the trilogy often come for the blend of ghost story and police investigation, then stay for Delia, Gabe, their friends, and the way they look after one another when the danger gets personal.

Moyer also liked to revisit familiar legends from a different angle. Brightfall follows a powerful Marian in a darker version of the Robin Hood story, while Divine Heretic reimagines Jeanne d'Arc as a young woman fighting creatures that claim to be holy guides. Later standalones such as Youngest and Disposable Son continue her interest in magic, family bonds, betrayals, and people trying to reclaim the lives others have tried to take from them.

Her stories can get dark, but they make room for friendship, loyalty, love, and hard-won safety.

Moyer lived in Texas for many years and wrote often about cats, reading, and making things by hand. She later moved to East Lansing, Michigan, where she died on February 29, 2024. Her books remain welcoming entry points for readers who like old stories made stranger, mysteries with real emotional stakes, and magic that always comes with a cost.
