Series background & context

The Delia's Shadow series is a historical fantasy mystery set in San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire. The city is rebuilding, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition is drawing visitors in 1915, and the dead have not entirely left. Delia Martin can see ghosts, a gift that has made ordinary life difficult and makes a crowded, wounded city especially hard to bear.

Delia has spent years trying to escape the spirits that follow her. When one unusually determined ghost brings her back to San Francisco, she finds herself caught in a murder investigation that reaches into the city's past. Her ability to see the dead is not a simple clue-making device. Ghosts can be frightened, confused, angry, demanding, or dangerous, and Delia has to learn how to protect herself while deciding whom she can help.

Captain Gabriel, or Gabe, Ryan gives the series its other anchor. He is a San Francisco police detective who cannot see what Delia sees, but he takes victims and justice seriously. The books pair his practical investigations with Delia's growing knowledge of spiritual arts. Their partnership, along with the support of close friends and allies, keeps the stories focused on people as much as on hauntings.

The ghosts are never merely background decoration.

Each novel brings a new case and a larger threat while moving the setting forward through the 1910s. Delia's Shadow begins with a serial killer whose crimes have ties to an insistent spirit. In A Barricade in Hell, Delia and Gabe face a haunting centered on a young girl and an investigation involving a charismatic public figure. Against a Brightening Sky takes place after the Great War, when refugees, political unrest, and the ghost of a European princess bring old-world danger into San Francisco.

The tone is dark without being bleak. Expect supernatural suspense, murder investigations, period detail, and romance, with a steady thread of friendship and chosen family. The series is interested in grief and violence, but also in what people owe one another after tragedy. Delia becomes more capable with her gifts across the books, while Gabe keeps trying to give the living and the dead the justice they were denied.

Read the novels in publication order. The mysteries have their own main conflicts, but Delia and Gabe's relationship, Delia's training, and the wider circle around them develop from one book to the next. Starting with Delia's Shadow gives the strongest introduction to both the haunted city and the people determined to keep it safe.
