Series background & context
Jacky Leon starts from a simple promise and gets much bigger from there. In Oath Sworn, Jacky is a werecat who mostly wants to mind her own business, run her bar, and stay out of supernatural politics. That plan falls apart when Carey Everson, the very human daughter of a werewolf Alpha, needs protection. Jacky gives her word, and once she does that, the whole series locks into place.
Jacky is the kind of heroine who does not go looking for drama, but she will plant her feet and fight when duty calls. The books are set in a version of modern Texas where the supernatural world exists under strict laws, old treaties, and a constant tension between secrecy and survival. Werecats, werewolves, fae, and Tribunal politics all shape the wider story, but the series never loses sight of Jacky's point of view. She sees the world with a practical eye, a dry streak of humor, and a very strong sense of obligation.
That sense of obligation is everything here. As Family and Honor and Broken Loyalty unfold, Jacky's hidden identity becomes harder to protect, especially once her connection to Hasan, ruler of the werecats, is known. Territory disputes, pack trouble, family expectations, and old enemies start stacking up. What began as one oath turns into a life built around protecting borders, people, and principles.
She keeps getting pulled deeper.
Later books widen the scope without changing the core appeal. Echoed Defiance brings family history back to her doorstep. Shades of Hate shows how fragile a hard-won life can be. Royal Pawn and Bitter Discord pull Jacky into bigger power struggles involving the fae, the werecats, humans, and the werewolves tied to her territory. The action is sharp, but the real hook is watching Jacky grow into authority she never asked for and then decide what kind of leader she wants to be.
This is urban fantasy with claws, but it also has a strong emotional spine. The books care about loyalty, chosen family, grief, and the problem of doing what is right when the law is not enough. If you like supernatural politics grounded by a stubborn, capable lead, Jacky Leon has a very easy pull.
