Series background & context

Witch of the Wild West takes Kristen Banet's love of supernatural chaos and drops it straight into a frontier setting. The books are built around Adalyn Lovett, the only witch in Redstone, a Wild West town where the supernatural is out in the open among saloons, marshals, bounty hunters, working girls, and the sort of trouble that likes to roll in on horseback. It is a fun pitch, and the series leans into it.

Adalyn is the engine. She is a wild magic witch, which means her power is strong, unpredictable, and not something polite society finds comforting. She is also stubborn enough to use it anyway. When Bounty Hunters and Black Magic begins, she is still carrying grief from the demon attack that killed her sheriff husband, and her attempt to protect Redstone with a piece of forbidden black magic turns into a much bigger mess than planned. Demons, bounty hunters, and a warlock U.S. Marshal all end up in the same orbit.

That gives the series its tone. These books are paranormal romance, but they are also frontier adventure stories with a scrappy, dusty energy. Redstone is the kind of place where personal problems and town problems blur together fast. Magic matters, but so do local loyalties, old losses, and whether Adalyn can make the people around her accept that she is not a woman who wants to be managed.

She does not make life easy for anyone, including herself.

Werewolves and Wranglers picks up that thread by pushing Adalyn into the sheriff's role and dropping her into a range war involving the local werewolf pack. At the same time, the romance side gets messier as her oldest friends and newer love interests clash around her. So the continuing tension is not only about demons or outside danger. It is also about authority, independence, and who gets to define Adalyn's future.

This is a short two-book series, so it reads more like a compact paranormal western than a long epic. If you want a genre mash-up with magic, monsters, frontier law, and a heroine who refuses to sit quietly on the sidelines, it has a lot of charm. The world is weird in a very deliberate way, and that is most of the fun.
