The Englefield series mixes Victorian romance with time travel, magic, demons, and the uneasy feeling that polite society is only one thin layer over a much stranger world. These books begin in late nineteenth-century England, but the danger comes from a future where humanity is losing a war against supernatural forces. Stopping that future means changing the past.

The opening novel, No Proper Lady, follows Joan, a soldier from that ruined future. She is sent back to 1888 to kill the magician whose actions will unleash the demons. Her mission brings her to Simon Grenville, a Victorian magician who becomes her guide to a world with rules Joan does not know and social expectations she finds baffling. Their partnership has to cover everything from ballroom manners to deadly magical threats.

The series then expands through the work Simon and Joan do after their first adventure. In Lessons After Dark, they have helped establish Englefield, a school for children with unusual gifts. Olivia Brightmore arrives to teach there hoping for a new beginning, only to find a wary doctor, Dr. Gareth St. John, and a dark mystery surrounding the school. The setting gives the series a different rhythm, with magical students, lessons that can go wrong, and adults trying to keep danger away from children.

Englefield is not a boarding-school story in the usual sense. The school exists because magic is real and the people who understand it know that the world needs prepared defenders. Its students can be mischievous, frightened, talented, or all three at once. The adults are responsible for teaching them, protecting them, and figuring out what kind of threat is moving closer.

Across the books, the romances are central but never isolated from the fantasy plot. Joan and Simon must bridge a two-hundred-year gap in experience and expectations. Olivia and Gareth have to work past mistrust and old assumptions while facing a supernatural crisis. The larger world leaves room for secret magical practices, haunted places, demons, and questions about who gets to decide how power should be used.

Expect Victorian settings with a sharp paranormal edge. The series has action and danger, but it also enjoys the awkward practicalities of its premise: a soldier from the future has to pass as a lady, and a magical school still needs competent teachers. Start with No Proper Lady, since it establishes the future threat, the key characters, and the foundation for what Englefield becomes.
