Howard Turk Books in Order

Howard Turk came to fiction with a resume that already sounded half like a thriller. He was born in Pittsburgh, studied in the United States and Europe, and earned a master's degree in economics. Before he published historical mysteries, he had already spent years moving through institutions, countries, and jobs that would later feed directly into his fiction.

First came military service. Turk served with the Air Force in Germany. After that he joined the CIA, where he spent almost ten years working in both overt and covert operations. He later moved into international banking, specializing in Asia. Taken together, those careers gave him firsthand experience with bureaucracy, intelligence work, travel, and the way politics can shape ordinary lives.

That is not the usual road to a mystery series.

His turn toward writing seems to have grown out of the Asia years. Author biographies for his novels say he developed a deep interest in China and in Asian history, especially the unsettled period between the two world wars. That interest shows up everywhere in his fiction. He does not use history as wallpaper. In his books, rail lines, concessions, refugee neighborhoods, political factions, and foreign consulates all matter to the plot.

Most readers know Turk through the Jake Greenberg novels that make up the Shanghai sequence. In The Last Train, Jake is caught in the Russian Civil War while hunting a killer aboard a train out of Omsk. West of Shanghai moves into warlord-era China, while The Second Enemy and Betrayal in Shanghai throw Jake into murder cases with political consequences. Later books such as Lost in Shanghai, High Stakes in Shanghai, and The Shanghai Spy lean even harder into espionage, divided loyalties, and the pressure of war.

What people tend to like in these books is the blend. They work as mysteries, but they also read like spy stories and historical adventures. Jake is not a superhero. He is a practical man who keeps finding himself a little too close to people with guns, secrets, or influence. Turk's background helps here. The tradecraft, the international money, the border crossings, and the sense that every favor has a price all feel lived in rather than borrowed.

Steel Town shows he could shift settings without losing that interest in power and corruption.

That novel leaves Shanghai behind and heads to a 1952 mill town, where a young Jewish immigrant gets tangled in murder and labor politics. Even there, Turk stays drawn to systems under strain and to outsiders trying to find the truth before someone stronger closes the door.

Turk kept returning to the same big questions: who really holds power, what happens when governments and criminals overlap, and how ordinary people survive when history turns rough. His publisher bios place him in Columbia, Maryland, with his wife, Karen. It feels fitting that a writer with that kind of working life ended up telling stories about people who are always reading the room, weighing the risk, and moving before it is too late.
