Honors Books in Order

The Honors series is a YA space adventure with a very good central pairing: a street-smart human girl and a sentient alien ship. Zara Cole starts out on Earth as a tough, angry survivor from New Detroit, not someone being groomed for noble space diplomacy. When she is chosen as an Honor and sent to partner with the Leviathan Nadim, the series gets its main emotional spark. Zara is suspicious, damaged, and funny in a rough-edged way. Nadim is curious, strange, and much more than a vehicle.

That human-ship bond is the thing to watch. The books absolutely have space war, pursuit, alien politics, criminals, monsters, and wider stakes, but the series works because it keeps returning to the relationships inside the chaos. Zara, Nadim, and co-pilot Beatriz carry a lot of the weight, and the found-family side of the story matters just as much as the action.

The scale gets big quickly.

Once the first book leaves Earth behind, the series opens into a universe full of beautiful places, hidden dangers, and a war nobody fully explained at the start. That sense of being thrown into a conflict larger than you understand fits Zara well. She is good at adapting, but the books never pretend adaptation is painless. Trauma, mistrust, and the need to decide who deserves loyalty all stay close to the surface.

The tone is adventurous and readable, but it is not shallow. Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre make room for grief, displacement, and the way survival can shape a person before the story even begins.
