Author bio
Heather Atkinson writes the kind of stories she loves to read, packed with danger, family drama and a touch of the uncanny. She has built a loyal following with gangland sagas, gothic historical mysteries and the occasional leap into fantasy and paranormal romance.
Born and raised in Lancashire in the north of England, she later moved to Scotland’s west coast, settling in North Ayrshire with her husband, their twin daughters and a cat called Mavis. The contrast between the industrial north and the dramatic Scottish shoreline finds its way into her settings, from tough Manchester streets to windswept villages and eerie country houses.
Before writing full time, she worked for several years as a medical secretary in both medical and surgical departments. That experience gave her a close-up look at hospitals, injuries and recovery, details she has reused many times when her characters land in intensive care or wake up after a beating.
She always wrote in snatches of spare time, but things changed when her children started nursery and she finally had a few quiet hours in the day. Out of that space came Dividing Line, the first novel in what became a long, much-loved Manchester gangland series. Starting with self-publishing, she built Rachel Maguire’s world book by book into a sprawling saga of the Maguire and Law families, full of shifting loyalties, brutal wars and complicated love stories.
Crime has never been her only lane. She is just as happy writing about private investigator Brodie MacBride taking on “unfinished business” in Glasgow as she is following the Chambers crime family in the Blagger’s Code books, a biker-led prequel in the Mayhem trilogy, or a lone assassin in the Raven series. Across these stories she often flips the camera between police, criminals and victims, letting readers sit with each side of the line.
History and the gothic are another strong thread. In the Alardyce novels she moves to Victorian Edinburgh, following Amy Osbourne and her troubled descendants through a house full of secrets, street murders and the sense that evil can run in the blood. In Bleed Through and other early standalones she uses real historical events and periods she has researched for years, mixing them with romance and the supernatural.
Atkinson has said she reads widely, from classic crime to ghost stories. She often mentions the Brontës, Daphne du Maurier, Edgar Allan Poe, Shirley Jackson and M. R. James as favourites, and you can feel that influence in her love of brooding settings, morally grey characters and the occasional well-timed chill.
Over the years she has grown from an independent Kindle author into a hybrid writer, continuing to self publish some series while also signing with Boldwood Books for titles like the Gallowburn, Savage Sisters, Alardyce and Bloody MacGregors novels. However the book reaches readers, she still treats writing as a full-time job that somehow does not quite feel like work.
When she is not at the keyboard she keeps things simple: walking on the coast, swimming, reading and spending time with her family. The result on the page is a body of work that is fast paced but rooted in people – mothers, sisters, lovers and loners trying to draw their own line between survival and doing the right thing.
