When a supposedly simple robbery puts the Chambers brothers on the wrong side of vicious drug dealer Lenny Paisley, expelled daughter Faith returns to Blackpool and leads a brutal fightback against both gangsters and corrupt police.
Series background & context
Blagger’s Code introduces the Chambers family, a clan of small-time robbers from Blackpool whose latest job drops them into the path of one of the most dangerous men in the north. What should have been a simple robbery turns out to hit an associate of Lenny Paisley, a brutal drug dealer who runs the strongest crew in the resort town.
Lenny’s retaliation is swift and shocking. After the youngest Chambers brother is beaten half to death while the others are forced to watch, matriarch Rose realises her sons are out of their depth. She calls back her estranged daughter Faith, once run out of town for a crime she did not commit, to clean up the mess.
Faith is one of Atkinson’s toughest creations – sharp, loyal and unwilling to let either the police or the local crime lord dictate how her family will live. Branded a troublemaker by corrupt officers who framed her brother, she decides that the only way to protect the Chambers clan is to go on the offensive, targeting Lenny’s operation and exposing the bent cops who shelter him.
As the series moves through Rough Justice, Takedown and later titles, the Chambers’ influence grows, but so does the list of enemies. Lenny’s relatives, rival crews and law enforcement all push back. Atkinson shows how a family can become both a strength and a vulnerability – every victory opens up a new flank where loved ones can be hurt.
Set against the faded glamour and seafront grit of Blackpool, Blagger’s Code offers a slightly different texture to the Manchester and Glasgow books. There is plenty of violence and betrayal, but also dark humour, sibling bickering and a constant question about whether the Chambers are climbing towards power or digging their own graves.
