Series background & context

The Hockey Guys books spin out of Sarina Bowen's larger Brooklyn hockey world, but they have a different center of gravity. These are M/M romances about pro players, coaches, trainers, and the men around the game, and the books care just as much about identity, privacy, and emotional honesty as they do about the standings.

You still get plenty of hockey.

Trades, travel, bad seasons, media pressure, locker-room dynamics, and the weird instability of a sports career are all part of the package. But the series hook is what happens when that environment collides with attraction the characters cannot safely ignore. In The New Guy, a traded player and a single-dad athletic trainer fall hard at the exact wrong moment. I'm Your Guy pulls one player into an unexpected bisexual awakening while he is supposed to be focusing on a house project, not the man helping him furnish it. The Last Guy on Earth turns a trade into a much messier second chance between a player and the coach he used to love. My Kind of Guy shifts toward a goalie in freefall and the bartender who becomes his safe place.

That variety helps the series feel roomy without losing its identity. Some books are softer. Some are angstier. Some lean hard into caretaking or forbidden attraction. But all of them understand hockey as a workplace that can intensify everything, ego, loneliness, ambition, fear of exposure, and the hunger for one person who sees the part of you that is not performing.

The tone is sexy and emotional, but there is also a lot of tenderness here. Bowen gives these men room to be funny, stubborn, scared, and unexpectedly domestic. She likes the contrast between a brutal sport and the quiet work of letting someone take care of you.

If you want queer hockey romance with crossover characters, found family, and plenty of on-ice context, Hockey Guys is one of the clearest entry points in Bowen's catalog. The books stand alone, but together they build a satisfying little world of second chances, fresh starts, and men learning to stop hiding in plain sight.
