Author bio
Hildie McQueen was born in Baja California and grew up in San Diego. Spanish was her first language, and she learned English in elementary school. Long before she was publishing romance, she spent about thirty years working in Military Intelligence, first as a soldier and later as a civilian.
That work took her all over the world.
She has said she was always an avid reader, but writing arrived later. In 2009 she started writing romance, and by 2011 she had a publishing deal. Since then she has built a wide-ranging backlist that moves easily from medieval Scotland to Montana, from Regency ballrooms to paranormal castles.
A lot of her books turn on unusual setups and strong emotional pressure. Readers who pick up A Heartless Laird or The Lion will find feuding clans, proud warriors, and women who do not fold just because a laird growls at them. In her western romances, including A Different Shade of Blue and Judith: Bride of Wyoming, she shifts to frontier towns, mail-order marriages, and people trying to build steadier lives in hard places.
She likes love stories, but she also likes momentum.
That mix shows up in her later work too. An Enchanted Knight and the other books in The Cursed Kingdom add magic, curses, and a Scottish castle full of trapped knights. The Sea Lyon heads out onto dangerous water with pirates, old wounds, and a second chance at love. Even when the setting changes, her stories tend to return to the same things: loyalty, family pressure, survival, forgiveness, and people learning to trust what they feel.
Travel matters to her life and to her books. She has visited Scotland to walk through castles, villages, and the landscape that feeds her Highland stories. She has also traveled through Montana and Wyoming while writing her westerns, visiting forts and historic sites so the places on the page feel lived in instead of borrowed.
She's also very clear about why she writes romance. She has said she writes it because she is in love with love.
Off the page, the details are pleasantly down to earth. Tea comes up again and again when she talks about her life, and so do planners, pink things, and quiet writing time. She has spoken about loving travel, reader events, and time with friends, and about ending the day with television and ice cream like the rest of us.
These days she lives in a small town in Georgia with her husband Kurt and their little dogs. From there, she keeps adding new books to a bibliography that is surprisingly varied but easy to recognize once you've spent time in it. Whether she is writing a wounded Highlander, a wary governess, or a woman heading west toward a stranger, the draw is usually the same: complicated people, high emotion, and a hard-won happy ending.
