Series background & context

Rogues of the Lowlands follows a group of Scottish gentlemen who have charm, ambition, and nowhere near enough money. Instead of lairds guarding clan lands, these heroes are lower-born or lesser-positioned men trying to scheme their way into financial security, and that gives the series a fun change of energy.

The core setup is wonderfully risky. The friends decide they need capital and start looking at marriage, seduction, and rich women as a solution. A Rogue to Reform kicks things off with Evan Macleod, whose plan would be a lot easier if he were not in danger of falling for the wrong woman. The later books keep the same mix of friendship, bad planning, and genuine feeling.

Because the men know they are behaving badly, the series gets to play with reform in a very direct way. These are not rogues in name only. They are making selfish choices and then discovering that love asks for more decency than they planned to offer.

If you want McQueen in a slightly lighter Scottish historical mode, with charm, money problems, and a group of friends whose schemes keep backfiring, this is a good series to try.
