Series background & context

Shades of Blue is one of Hildie McQueen's western historical series, set in Montana and filled with the kind of small-town trouble that frontier romance does especially well. Gossip travels fast, privacy is scarce, and one awkward moment can turn into a marriage plan before breakfast.

The series begins with A Different Shade of Blue, which gives you a good sense of the tone right away. There is chemistry, humor, social pressure, and two people carrying more pain than anyone around them realizes. Later books like The Darkest Blue, Every Blue Moon, Blue Horizon, and Montana Blue keep building out that world.

These are not sprawling wagon-train epics. They are closer, more community-based westerns, with town life, family entanglements, and couples who cannot hide from each other for long because everyone lives in each other's business. That gives the books a cozy frame even when the emotional stakes are high.

If you like historical western romance with strong heroines, wounded heroes, and a place that feels lived in rather than decorative, this is a good series to try. The holiday entry, Blue Montana Christmas, also makes it easy to dip in if you want a seasonal side trip.
