The Her Guardians books are the outlier in Jaimie Roberts's catalogue, because they lean into the paranormal right from the start. Cassie Johnson has a gift that makes normal dating almost impossible, whenever she touches someone's hand, she can see pieces of their past, present, and future. It sounds useful until you imagine having no real protection from other people's secrets. Roberts uses that idea to give the series both its romance problem and its mystery.

Cassie works around police officers, and that grounded setting helps the stranger parts land. She is drawn to Michael, an officer who matters to her more than she wants to admit, even though he seems cold and distant. Then Stephen arrives, and the problem shifts. Cassie cannot read him at all. For someone who has lived her whole life flooded by other people's truths, that blank space is both thrilling and alarming.
