Toni Owens is divorced, low on money, and ready to rebuild her life, so she buys a mountain lodge and heads off to make something new out of it. What she finds is a rundown property, a town full of personalities, and a murder problem before she has even had a chance to settle in.
That setup gives the books their shape. On one side, these are classic start-over cozies. Toni is fixing up a property, learning a new town, making friends, and trying to believe she really can build a better life. On the other side, the lodge is haunted, the murders keep coming, and peace never lasts long.
The mountain setting matters a lot. It gives the series a cozier, more tucked-away feel than Maher's beach or small-town Southern books. That is one of the nice balances here. The hauntings add personality and comedy, but the series still works as a murder mystery set in a mountain bed-and-breakfast world. The paranormal element gives the lodge its own voice, while the community around Toni keeps the stakes personal.
If you like cozy mysteries that mix home renovation, second chances, and just enough supernatural mischief to keep things lively, this series does that well. It is probably one of Maher's warmest setups, even with the occasional corpse in the hallway or the garden.
