Series background & context
This series begins with a midlife collapse and turns it into a magical comeback. Jules Cavanaugh is divorced, her kids are grown, and the life she thought she understood has cracked open. Then she inherits a bar in coastal Florida from the father she barely knew, heads south for a reset, and discovers that starting over is going to involve a lot more than new furniture and fruity drinks.
The big twist is that Jules is magical, whether she was ready for that news or not. The bar, the house, and her father's past all pull her into a supernatural world that has been waiting on her. What starts as reinvention quickly becomes responsibility, because Jules is not just learning spells. She is getting drawn into a larger fight over balance, power, and some very dangerous magical objects.
What makes the series work is Jules herself. She is not a teen chosen one and not a brand-new adult either. She is a woman with history, habits, aches, regrets, and a pretty healthy sense of disbelief when life gets ridiculous. Maher gets a lot of humor out of that perspective. Jules may be saving the magical world, but she is also thinking about hot flashes, bad knees, ex-husband fallout, and whether anybody around her can just act normal for five minutes.
The supporting cast gives the books their momentum. There is romance, found family, witchy allies, a very memorable demon dog, pirate ghosts, and a growing sense that Jules has stumbled into a role far bigger than she wanted. The world keeps expanding, but it never loses that grounded midlife point of view.
That mix is the appeal.
These books are more action-heavy than Maher's smallest cozies, but they never forget to be funny. The stakes climb fast, especially once magical coins and larger supernatural threats come into play, yet the emotional core stays with a woman rebuilding her life on her own terms.
If you like paranormal women's fiction, magical Florida settings, and heroines who do not discover themselves until later in life, this series is a strong place to start. It has humor, heart, and enough magical chaos to keep a tiki bar very busy indeed.
