Series background & context
The Enchanted Coast books take Maher's paranormal mystery style and move it to the beach. The series follows Destiny Maganti, a water witch who works at a tiki bar inside a resort built for paranormal visitors. It is the kind of place where mermaids, werewolves, faeries, angels, valkyries, and other magical guests can all show up in one afternoon, which means Destiny's workday is rarely calm even before a body turns up.
That setting does a lot of the heavy lifting. The Enchanted Coast is bright, busy, and a little ridiculous in the best way. Maher gets plenty of mileage out of the contrast between breezy vacation vibes and actual homicide. A tropical drink in one hand, a murder problem in the other, that is more or less the tone.
Destiny is a strong fit for that world. She is practical, quick on her feet, and genuinely tied to the coast through her magic. She is also surrounded by memorable company, especially her familiar Tempest and the rest of the crew who help keep the resort running. Because the books are set in a hospitality world, the suspects and witnesses can come from just about anywhere. New guests, new species, new local complications, it all fits naturally.
Across the series, the mysteries grow out of resort life and the magical politics that come with it. A boss is poisoned. A guest is murdered. A fairy is accused. A stolen magical item threatens to blow up into something larger. The ongoing appeal is that Destiny has to protect both the people she cares about and the place itself. The resort is not just scenery. It is home turf.
These books are some of Maher's breeziest reads.
That does not mean they are light on stakes. The cases can still pull in bigger supernatural councils, royal trouble, or old grudges. But the overall feel stays sunny, fast, and fun. There is humor all through it, and the magical world is wide enough that each book can introduce something new without breaking the tone.
If you like paranormal cozies with a strong setting, a little tropical flair, and a heroine who has to juggle guests, gossip, and crime scenes all at once, this series is easy to settle into. It is beach reading, just with more magic and a higher body count.
