Harvest of Rubies

by Tessa Afshar

2012

Sarah, the cousin of Nehemiah, finds her worth in her ability to read and write, eventually becoming the Queen of Persia's senior scribe. But when she uncovers a palace plot, she is rewarded with an unwanted arranged marriage to Darius, a wealthy aristocrat. Sarah must learn that her value comes from God, not her career or her husband's approval.

Series background & context

Imagine the Persian Empire at its height. It is a world of gold, silk, and rigid expectations, especially for women. Sarah, the protagonist of this duology, doesn’t fit the mold. She isn't the stunning beauty that usually catches a king's eye, and she hasn't managed to secure a husband by the age of twenty. In the eyes of her father, a scribe who desperately wanted a son, she is a bit of a disappointment. But Sarah has a secret weapon that most women of her time are denied: education.

Because her father needed an assistant, she learned to read and write. She mastered languages. While she lacks the social graces of a courtier, she possesses the sharp mind of a scholar. This unique skill set pulls her out of obscurity and places her directly into the Queen’s court, working as a senior scribe.

Finally, she has a purpose.

However, professional success is a poor substitute for love, and Sarah’s life takes a sharp turn when she is thrust into an arranged marriage. Her husband is Darius, a Persian aristocrat who is wealthy, handsome, and completely uninterested in having a wife. He views the union as a necessary duty, while Sarah views it as another confirmation of her inadequacy. The dynamic between them is painful and realistic. This isn't a story where the couple falls into each other's arms immediately. Instead, they have to navigate a minefield of misunderstandings, cultural differences, and tall emotional walls.

Things get even more complicated because of who Sarah is related to. Her cousin is Nehemiah, the biblical cupbearer to the King. When political conspiracies threaten the throne and the safety of the Jewish people, Sarah finds herself in the middle of a dangerous game. She has to rely on her wit to survive palace intrigue that could easily get her killed.

What makes these books resonate so deeply isn't just the historical setting or the suspense; it is Sarah’s internal journey. She spends so much of her life trying to earn her place in the world through competence and hard work.

Over the course of Harvest of Rubies and its sequel, Harvest of Gold, she learns that her value doesn't come from her job title or her husband’s approval. The narrative eventually moves from the luxury of Susa to the broken walls of Jerusalem, mirroring Sarah’s own process of rebuilding. She trades the comfort of the palace for the hardship of a construction site, forcing her to confront what she really believes. It is a story about discovering that you are already loved, even when you feel like the least important person in the room.
