Series background & context

Matt Forbeck's Alpha-Nine stories follow Edward Buck and the soldiers whose shared service connects them across different stages of the Halo universe. Buck is familiar to players of Halo 3: ODST, where his team operates as Orbital Drop Shock Troopers. The books give more space to his background, his relationships and the changes that come with becoming a Spartan. Their focus remains on a soldier whose understanding of duty is shaped by the people beside him.

The team carries a history into every new assignment.

New Blood takes a personal approach to Buck's life, presenting his recollections of service. It follows the route from his youth into the UNSC Marine Corps, his work as an ODST and his eventual involvement in the Spartan-IV programme. This gives readers a way to understand the man beneath the armour, rather than encountering him only during a single operation. The story also deals with the events that pull his old team apart. The result connects military experience with questions about what happens to relationships built through years of danger.

Bad Blood begins in the aftermath of the events of Halo 5: Guardians. Cortana's new power has changed the galaxy, and Buck is caught in the uncertainty facing the Spartans and the wider UNSC. He must bring his former team together for a mission at a time when old wounds cannot simply be set aside. Reforming Alpha-Nine therefore requires more than putting soldiers in the same place. Their shared experience gives them reasons to trust one another, but also leaves disagreements and painful memories that affect their ability to work together.

The setting shifts the meaning of their service as the wider conflict changes. The ODST years place Buck among soldiers fighting within the Human-Covenant War, while his later role as a Spartan brings him into another stage of the franchise's military story. In Bad Blood, the team investigates how a colony has avoided detection by Cortana's Created. The mission draws the soldiers into a situation where understanding the local circumstances matters as much as fighting skill. Their past remains relevant even when the immediate threat is unfamiliar.

The tone mixes military action with Buck's personal perspective and an interest in loyalty. Readers who enjoyed Alpha-Nine in the games can find more of the team's background here, while the novels also explain why its members' relationships have become complicated. New Blood is the natural starting point because it establishes Buck's history before Bad Blood asks him to reconnect with that history under pressure. Reading them together follows a continuing character journey, with the military changes around Buck testing what he owes to his comrades and how far a damaged team can rebuild trust.
