Series background & context

The Half-Breed series follows Amber, a heroine who has every reason to feel pulled in opposite directions. She is part succubus and part elf, which means desire, magic, and identity are never simple for her. That mix gives the series its shape. These books are romantic, adventurous, and a little more openly sensual than some of the main Imp novels, but they are also very much about figuring out who you are when every side of your heritage comes with baggage.

Amber's relationship with the incubus Irix is the emotional spine that holds the series together. He is not just a love interest dropped in for sparks. He is tied to the same questions Amber is trying to answer, about temptation, control, loyalty, and what kind of future two people with demonic appetites can realistically build together. Their chemistry matters, but so does the fact that the books keep testing them in new places and under very different magical pressures.

Those places are a big part of the fun. One of the nice things about Half-Breed is how often it moves. New Orleans, Maui, Hel, California wine country, northern Italy, each book gives Amber a new environment and a new supernatural problem. Sometimes the trouble comes from covens and ley lines. Sometimes it comes from blight, plague, old family hatred, or the rigid ideas other beings have about purity and power. The travel gives the series a broader feel than a one-town paranormal romance.

Amber is also a practical kind of heroine, which helps. She is dealing with lust, danger, and magical chaos, but she still tends to approach problems as things that need solving. That keeps the books from floating away into pure mood. Even when the setup is sexy or emotionally charged, there is usually a concrete mess to untangle, and it often has real stakes for other people too.

The tone is warmer and more romantic than the grittier corners of Dunbar's shared world, but it still carries the same connected-universe appeal. Readers familiar with the Imp books will recognize the broader rules of the world. Readers new to Amber can still follow her story as its own thing.

If you want paranormal romance with movement, magic, and a heroine caught between two dangerous inheritances, Half-Breed is a good choice. The books give you romance, yes, but they also give you a woman trying to use every complicated piece of herself without letting any one part define her.
