California Demon Books in Order

The California Demon books take place in a Los Angeles that has gone badly off the rails. Demons, shifters, corrupt officials, and desperate humans are all trying to survive in the same ruined city, and the result feels less like shiny urban fantasy and more like a hard, hungry street story with magic in it.

At the center of the series is Eden Alvaro. She is a licensed Vulture, which means she scavenges the aftermath of violence and sells what she can to help support her family. Bishop, a dangerous fixer with a reputation for getting things done, becomes one of the key figures in that fight. Their partnership adds a strong current of tension to the series, but the emotional core stays with Eden's loyalty to her family and her growing sense that surviving is not enough anymore.

The setting really matters here. This is not just modern LA with a few monsters dropped on top. It is a city reshaped by supernatural control, black markets, broken neighborhoods, and people making ugly choices because the system is already wrecked. As the series goes on, Eden moves through demon-run territory, human underworld networks, and conflicts between humans, shifters, and everything in between. The scale keeps widening, but the books still feel close to the ground because Eden never stops seeing the human cost.

The tone is darker than some of Dunbar's lighter paranormal romances. There is action, danger, and some romance, but the main pull is the survival story and the city-level power struggle. Eden is not a polished chosen one. She is a woman backed into corners, learning fast, fighting hard, and uncovering truths about her own magic and identity that make every new decision more dangerous.

If you like urban fantasy that feels gritty, fast-moving, and personal, California Demon is a strong place to land. It starts with one woman trying to save her sister. It grows into a fight over who gets to control the city, and what kind of future is left for the people still trapped inside it.
