Author bio
Debra Dunbar writes the kind of fantasy that likes to grin at you before it throws a demon through the door. She works across urban fantasy, paranormal romance, mystery, and science fiction, but the thread that ties her books together is easy to spot. She likes sharp banter, supernatural trouble, and characters who keep going even when the universe is being deeply inconvenient.
She seems especially drawn to messy borders. Heaven and Hel. Humans and monsters. Duty and desire. Safety and chaos. That is where a lot of her stories live.
Dunbar began publishing in 2012 with A Demon Bound, the first full novel in her Imp universe. That book introduced Samantha Martin, an imp who would become the center of Dunbar's biggest world. Readers who click with Dunbar often click with Sam first. She is funny, selfish in believable ways, hard to shock, and still oddly easy to root for.
Then the world got bigger.
From the Imp books, Dunbar spun out a web of connected series and side stories. Dead Rising brings supernatural crime to modern Baltimore through Aria Ainsworth and the Templar Order. Brimstone and Broomsticks shifts into lighter paranormal romance with witches, demons, and small-town magical headaches. California Demon heads to a rougher Los Angeles, where scavenger Eden Alvaro is trying to keep her family alive in a city that has almost become hell on earth.
Even when the setting changes, the rhythm stays familiar. Dunbar likes capable heroines, oddball allies, and danger that ramps up fast. Her books are full of angels, demons, werewolves, vampires, witches, elves, mobsters, and the occasional alien. Somehow they rarely feel overcrowded. They feel busy in a good way, like every person in the room has a secret and half of them might be carrying a weapon.
She also likes variety.
That shows up in books like Wooden Nickels, a Prohibition-era fantasy full of moonshine, gangsters, and magic users, and in Adventures in Intergalactic Backpacking, which strands a hiker on a strange alien world with the last man she wants as a survival partner. She has also published science fiction as D.L. Dunbar, including Two Souls, a spacefaring story about vanished ships, political blame, and an admiral trying to stay ahead of a widening crisis.
For years, Dunbar's author bios have described a life split between writing at night and working a corporate job by day. They also place her in rural Maryland, with sons, dogs, and more than a little affection for animals, country living, and dry humor. She has written about jogging, horseback riding, and a jokingly claimed superpower called Identify Roadkill, which tells you quite a lot about the offbeat tone that runs through her fiction.
If you are new to her work, the easiest way in is to pick the flavor you want. Start with A Demon Bound if you want the biggest world and the most demon chaos. Try Brimstone and Broomsticks if you want something lighter and more romantic. Pick up Dead Rising if supernatural investigations are more your speed. However you start, you are stepping into books that move quickly, talk back, and rarely take the neatest road from problem to solution.
