Series background & context

Guardians is Susan Hayes's paranormal romantic suspense series about a connected group of protectors dealing with threats most ordinary people do not even believe in. Vampires, ghosts, rogue werewolves, and other dangerous beings exist in the background of everyday life, and the people in these books are the ones standing between that world and the humans caught in its path.

The tone is darker than her rom-com work, but not grim.

Each book follows a different couple while keeping the same wider network in view. That gives the series a nice balance. You get a full romance in every installment, but you also keep returning to familiar allies, shared history, and a sense that the team is part of something larger. The settings stay close to the modern world, which helps the supernatural elements feel immediate rather than remote.

One thing Hayes does well here is vary the kind of threat from book to book. One heroine may be targeted by a vampire. Another may be haunted by the past in a much more literal way. Another is trying to survive a werewolf problem that no normal safety plan can fix. The details change, but the through line stays the same, capable people in trouble, dangerous protectors, and romance under pressure.

Start with Defending Kyra and read forward through Saving Michelle, Protecting Jazz, and Guarding Val. If you like urban paranormal romance with a protective streak, linked characters, and enough suspense to keep the pages moving, this is a strong part of Hayes's backlist to explore.
