Series background & context

The Drift: Defiance Station is the newest branch of Susan Hayes's larger Drift universe, and it looks ready to push the setting into another frontier phase. If Astek Station was about life in a lawless trade hub and Haven Colony was about building a home, Defiance Station feels like the place where movement, risk, and work on the edge all meet again.

The name tells you a lot.

At the moment, the line begins with Her Cyborg Bounty Hunters, which suggests a more job-driven, crew-based angle than some of the colony books. That fits what readers already know about the wider Drift world. Stations create crossroads. Crossroads create trouble. And trouble is where Hayes tends to find her romances, especially when cyborgs, dangerous assignments, and people with complicated pasts are involved.

Even before the subseries fully expands, it is easy to see why it belongs inside the Drift universe. Corporate power is still a problem. The edges of space are still full of people trying to survive without much protection. And the characters most likely to matter here are the ones willing to take ugly jobs because someone has to.

If you already like the Drift books, this is the obvious next branch to try. Start with Her Cyborg Bounty Hunters and expect frontier energy, connected-world payoff, and the same blend of sci-fi action and romance that drives the rest of the universe.
