Series background & context

The original Drift books are set around Astek Station, a rough stretch of civilized space where people come because they have nowhere better to go. Out beyond the safer core worlds, the Drift has built its own economy out of mining, trade, clubs, casinos, repair work, and whatever else keeps ships moving. It is busy, messy, and a little lawless.

That is exactly why it works.

Susan Hayes uses that setting to bring together cyborgs, freighter crews, doctors, fighters, mechanics, and drifters who are all trying to carve out a future in a place ruled as much by money and corporate reach as by any official law. The romances vary in shape, some are couples, some are larger pairings, but they all share that same feeling of life on the edge. Nobody here has an easy road to a happily-ever-after.

The station itself matters. Astek is not just a backdrop. It is the reason the stories happen the way they do. People can disappear there. Start over there. Get rich there. Get used there. Fall in love there. And because the series keeps returning to the same wider world, every book makes the Drift feel a little bigger and a little more lived in.

If you like sci-fi romance with found family, cyborg heroes, strong worldbuilding, and a setting that feels grubby in a good way, this is one of Hayes's best entry points. Start with Double Down and keep going in order. The books are readable on their own, but the station, the cameos, and the sense of shared history land better when you move through them as a series.
