Author bio

G R Jordan is the pen name of Gary, a writer based on the Isle of Lewis whose books jump happily between Hebridean crime, occult fantasy, and interactive adventures. He grew up in Northern Ireland, has lived in many parts of the UK, and now writes from one of the landscapes that feeds so much of his fiction.

One straight line has never really suited him.

Before the novels, he studied chemical engineering at Loughborough University, though he has joked that American football was just as important to that stretch of life. After that came a run of jobs that sounds almost too varied to be true: work on cereal flakes, warehouse lifting, time spent watching vegetables freeze at minus 40, and later a career as one of the remaining blind air traffic controllers. It is easy to see why his books like capable people under pressure.

Writing arrived early through poetry and short stories, and that part of him never went away. He has said poetry was where his self-publishing journey began, even if novels later took over. That independent streak still shapes his career, with Carpetless Publishing acting as the home base for the wide mix of books he puts out.

Readers often meet him through Water's Edge, the opening Highlands & Islands Detective novel. That series follows DI Seoras Macleod and a changing team through murders set across Lewis, the Black Isle, ferries, villages, and other corners of the north of Scotland. What draws people in is not just the casework, but the way the setting, grief, faith, community pressure, and old loyalties all get tangled together.

He has also written that living on a conservative island, where social and religious debates can shape daily life, fed directly into the worldview clashes inside Water's Edge. That interest in what a community says in public and what it hides underneath shows up again and again across his crime fiction.

He does not like staying in one lane for long.

The rest of the catalogue proves it. A Shot at Democracy and the Kirsten Stewart thrillers shift into covert operations and political danger. Corpse Reviver introduces the sharper, more playful sleuthing of Contessa Munroe and her niece Tiff. Crescendo! opens the Austerley and Kirkgordon books, where cosmic horror, monsters, and mutual exasperation power a bigger supernatural adventure. Then Surface Tensions brings folklore to a Scottish island, while Darkness on a Foreign Shore turns the reader into a spy working in occupied France during the Second World War.

Some of those strands connect directly to his own interests. Growing up in Northern Ireland and later living in Scotland fed his fascination with Celtic myth and island communities. His tribute to Lovecraftian fiction is clear in the Austerley books, even while he makes it plain that he does not share H. P. Lovecraft's worldview. And his roleplaying line, Unravel Your Destiny, grew out of a long affection for classic gamebooks and a spark that came after meeting Jonathan Green at the 2019 UK Games Expo.

These days Gary shares life on Lewis with his wife, four children, and a small flock of chickens. He has joked that the chickens have not turned out to be the poetic inspiration he hoped for, which feels like exactly the kind of dry aside you would expect from someone who writes murderous coffee houses one month and demon wars the next. That mix of ordinary family life and restless imagination is a good way to understand the books themselves.
