Austerley & Kirkgordon Origins Books in Order

The Austerley and Kirkgordon Origins stories work like side doors into the bigger supernatural series. They are not filler and they do not feel like scraps. Instead, they give you the backstory, perspective shifts, and strange personal histories that make the wider world richer. If the main novels show the large-scale battles against cosmic evil, the origins books show what those battles cost the people caught inside them.

Footsteps is the clearest example. It takes readers back to the first meeting between Kirkgordon and Austerley, told from Kirkgordon's point of view and framed like a police statement after a nightmare outing beneath a New England graveyard. It is tense, darkly funny in places, and a very good introduction to why Kirkgordon finds Austerley both fascinating and unbearable. Cally does something different by stepping into Calandra's past and showing the damage, loyalty, and violence that shaped her into the formidable figure seen later.

These books stay close to character.

The People in the Pool pushes the series into something quieter and eerier, using grief and the impossible return of the dead to explore the uncanny side of the Austerley world. That range is the point of the Origins line. One story may be a bruising first encounter, another a warrior's backstory, another an intimate supernatural wound. Together they fill out the corners of the mythos without needing the scale of a full novel.

If you already like Austerley and Kirkgordon, these stories give you more of what makes the main line work. If you are new, they can also serve as a softer way in, especially Footsteps. Read them as companion pieces rather than strict prerequisites, and enjoy how much they deepen the people moving through Jordan's strangest world.
