Series background & context

The Highlands & Islands Detective books begin with Water's Edge, where DI Seoras Macleod is sent back to the Isle of Lewis, the place tied to the worst loss of his life. That return gives the series its emotional shape. Macleod is good at his job, stubborn, and often carrying more grief than he wants to show. Beside him is Hope McGrath, younger, sharper, and far less willing to accept his habits without a fight.

The setting matters almost as much as the crimes. These novels move through Lewis, Harris, the Black Isle, ferries, small towns, oil rigs, retirement villages, and weather-beaten corners of the north. Jordan uses those places well. A ferry crossing, a village green, a cricket club, or a coffee house can all become a pressure cooker once a body turns up and everyone starts keeping back just one more thing.

These are police procedurals with a strong local pulse.

What keeps the series moving is the push and pull between public respectability and the mess underneath. Macleod and McGrath investigate murder, terrorism, fraud, vigilante justice, and private obsessions, but the cases are rarely just puzzles. They also expose family strain, island politics, old grievances, and the way a close community can protect its own even when it should not. As the books go on, both detectives change, and the partnership becomes the real anchor.

The tone sits somewhere between moody Scottish crime and fast-moving thriller. The books are not cozy, but they are readable and grounded, with clear stakes and strong momentum. If you like detectives who feel worn in rather than glamorous, and murder cases that grow out of place and people, this series has a lot to dig into. Start with Water's Edge and watch the relationship at the center deepen from there.
