Series background & context
Kirsten Stewart starts out on the edge of the Highlands murder world, but this series really takes shape once she steps into the shadowier business of national security. By the time A Shot at Democracy opens, she has left ordinary police work behind and is operating in the secret services, where a half-heard conversation can matter as much as a body at the scene. That change gives these books a different rhythm from the Macleod novels. They are faster, more covert, and more willing to chase danger across bigger political ground.
Kirsten is the kind of lead who works best under pressure, even when the pressure is unreasonable. She is resourceful, physically capable, and smart enough to know that information is often being kept from her by friend and foe alike. Her cases throw her at assassins, terrorists, foreign operatives, criminal networks, and people who have decided Scotland is the perfect place to play out a wider plan. Sometimes the threat is close and personal, as in The Hunted Child. Sometimes it is political and explosive, as in The Nationalist Express or A Shot at Democracy.
Trust is always in short supply here.
Another big part of the series is scale. These books still use Highland settings, ports, coastlines, and northern cities, but the stakes reach far beyond a single town. A missing cache, a rogue agent, or a disappearing celebrity can carry consequences for governments, media, and international relations. That gives the stories more of a spy-thriller feel, while still keeping Kirsten rooted in recognisably Scottish places.
If you want suspense that moves quickly, with secret teams, divided loyalties, and missions that can go sideways in a heartbeat, this is a good place to start. Read the books in order if you can. Kirsten's confidence, alliances, and sense of who she can rely on build best that way, and the tension lands harder when you have seen how much each job costs her.
