Series background & context
Kenny Soward's GnomeSaga is a fantasy trilogy set in Sullenor, a world of gnomes, stonekin, magic, inventions, and dangerous routes between worlds. The series begins in Hightower, a city where status and tradition matter, and where a clever invention can draw the wrong kind of attention.
Niksabella Nur is a gnome inventor who has spent years working in the shadows. Her unusual ideas make her easy to dismiss, but one of her creations, the recursive mirror, has consequences far beyond her workshop. It can change the balance of power, which means powerful people want to control it, destroy it, or use it for themselves.
Her brother is no simple sidekick.
Nikselpik Nur is a gifted wizard with a sharp tongue, a drinking habit, and a serious problem with bugging, an addictive source of euphoria. The siblings have plenty of old resentment between them, but they are also tied together when Hightower faces murder, political pressure, and the threat of invasion from the Ultraworlds.
Rough Magick introduces Niksabella, Nikselpik, the city of Hightower, and the first signs that the Baron and his forces are coming. Tinkermage raises the stakes as Nikselpik takes on the role of First Wizard, Niksabella leaves the city to unlock the potential of her invention, and allies scout for support. Cogweaver brings the conflict toward open war, with the siblings forced to face enemies inside and outside their own world.
The series has a lively mix of high fantasy and oddball invention. There are wizards, necromancy, airships, swamp elves, stonekin, gods, and gnome politics, but the core remains the Nur siblings and their uneasy loyalty to one another. Niksabella wants to be taken seriously for her work. Nikselpik wants to overcome his own worst habits and protect the people he loves.
Read the trilogy in order. The big threat builds from book to book, and the emotional weight comes from watching the siblings change as Hightower's future becomes harder to defend.
