Series background & context

Edge of Extinction, written by Kenny Soward with Mike Kraus, begins with a disaster in the far north and quickly becomes a global survival crisis. Joint American and Russian mega-rigs in the Arctic catch fire, killing thousands and opening fissures that release vast amounts of hydrocarbons into the atmosphere.

Zach Christensen is a mechanic who survives the initial firestorm, only to find himself trapped in the Arctic, thousands of miles from his wife and children in Connecticut. The immediate problem is brutal: breathable air, extreme cold, fire, toxins, and a route out. But Zach's larger purpose is getting home to Wendy and the children before the spreading catastrophe makes that impossible.

Home is a long way away.

The series follows both sides of that separation. Zach joins a difficult journey south while governments try to hide or contain the scope of the disaster. Wendy and the children must defend their home against bad weather, growing shortages, desperate neighbors, and the social damage that follows when people realize the crisis is not going away.

Scorched sets up the Arctic catastrophe and Zach's separation from his family. Cold Harbor adds the struggle of a joint task force trying to seal the rifts, alongside Wendy's fight to protect the family. In Whirlwind and the later books, the travel and survival problems intensify as Zach's group pushes toward the mainland and the family confronts danger closer to home.

This is a post-apocalyptic road story as much as a disaster story. Its tension comes from distance, weather, toxic fallout, damaged infrastructure, and the question of how much a family can endure while waiting for someone to return. Zach is not trying to save the world alone. He is trying to save the people who make the world worth returning to.

Start with Scorched and read in order. Each book follows the continuing aftermath of the same event and the long effort to bring a separated family back together.
