Cole was one of the people who made her teenage years difficult, so their growing attraction comes with history attached.

The final book, Smart Girls Think Twice, focuses on sociologist Emma Riley. She returns to Rock Creek for her sisters' weddings and to study the town's sudden popularity, then finds herself drawn to extreme athlete Jake Slayter. Like the earlier books, it uses the town's gossip, family networks, and unexpected disruptions to push two guarded people together.

Across the series, romance is tied to belonging. The heroines have to decide what home means to them, whether family can change, and how much of their lives they want to control alone. The men tend to be stubborn, but the women are not interested in being rescued.
