Author bio
Cat Devon was the paranormal-romance pen name of Cathie Linz, a Chicago-born writer whose career stretched from early contemporary romances to vampires, witches, ghosts, and one very memorable cupcake shop.
Linz was born in Chicago on November 29, 1954. Books were part of her working life long before they became her profession. She worked as a librarian, including as head of acquisitions at a university law library, and brought that reader's curiosity to the stories she wrote.
Then she made the jump to fiction. Her first novel, Remembrance of Love, arrived in 1982, followed by a long run of contemporary romances known for quick dialogue, family complications, stubborn people, and humor that keeps the emotional moments from becoming too solemn.
She wrote more than fifty romances under the name Cathie Linz.
Many of those books put an independent woman opposite a man with a complicated job, a guarded heart, or both. The Men of Honor novels pair military heroes with women who do not make life easy for them. The Girls Do Or Don't books head to small-town Pennsylvania for romances involving librarians, family secrets, second chances, and plenty of local interference. Later, the West Investigations stories brought mystery into the mix, with librarians and investigators untangling old trouble while trying not to fall for the wrong person.
Linz also enjoyed the organized chaos of linked romances. In Three Weddings and a Gift, three siblings find love with help from a family heirloom. The Marriage Makers books let well-meaning matchmakers meddle in other people's futures. Her stories often return to Chicago or the Midwest, and they make room for working people, close families, old crushes, unexpected babies, inherited obligations, and the occasional fake engagement.
Her Cat Devon books took that light, romantic energy into paranormal territory. The Entity series is set in a version of Chicago where vampires, witches, demon hunters, and ghosts live close to ordinary people. Sleeping with the Entity introduces cupcake-maker Daniella Delaney and vampire clan leader Nick St. George. The Entity Within, Love Your Entity, and Tall, Dark and Immortal widen that world with magic, mysteries, danger, and romances that start in inconvenient circumstances.
She clearly liked mixing the familiar with the strange.
Linz was also active in the romance community. She served as a liaison between Romance Writers of America and libraries, spoke at library and writers' events, and contributed to Dangerous Men and Adventurous Women, a collection of essays about romance fiction. Her work received industry and reader honors, including a Storyteller of the Year award.
She lived in the Chicago area with her family and cats, and often mentioned a love of travel, dark chocolate, cupcakes, and books. Cathie Linz died in Chicago on March 7, 2015, at age sixty. The Cat Devon novels remain a fun late-career detour, especially for readers who like their Chicago romances with fangs, magic, and a little danger.
