Series background & context
The Garnet Run books are connected contemporary romances set in a small Wyoming town where people know one another's business, animals have a way of bringing strangers together, and community is not always optional. Each main book follows a new couple, so the romances can work on their own, but reading in order lets the town, its friendships, and its running jokes grow around you.
This is a series with plenty of pets.
It starts with Better Than People, where anxious graphic designer Simon Burke uses a pet-sharing app to spend time with animals while he waits to adopt a dog. He meets Jack Matheson, a grumpy children's-book illustrator with a broken leg and a house full of rescue animals. Their arrangement begins with dog walking, but Jack's pack and Simon's careful routines make a real relationship possible.
Best Laid Plans moves to Jack's older brother, Charlie, who has spent years holding together his family's hardware store and putting his own wants aside. Rye Janssen arrives in town after inheriting a badly neglected house, and Charlie cannot quite leave him to handle the repairs alone. Their relationship is quieter and slower, with a lot of attention to home, trust, and the question of what it means to put down roots.
The later books keep changing the seasonal scenery. The Lights on Knockbridge Lane is a Christmas romance about single dad Adam Mills, his young daughter Gus, and their private new neighbor, Wes Mobray. The Rivals of Casper Road turns to Halloween, when newcomer Bram Larkspur challenges architect Zachary Glass in a local decorating contest and an escalating prank war becomes something more personal. The short The Pride of Garnet Run and Shelter in Garnet Run offer smaller visits with new couples and familiar residents.
The town does a lot of the work here.
Garnet Run is cozy, but it is not a world where every problem disappears because someone hangs lights or adopts a cat. The characters bring anxiety, grief, family pressure, difficult pasts, and fear of change into their relationships. The books meet those struggles with warmth, humor, direct conversations, and a supporting cast that can be wonderfully nosy when needed.
Expect contemporary queer romance with distinct couples, found family, gentle humor, seasonal atmosphere, and a strong sense of place. Start with Better Than People for the clearest introduction to Jack, Simon, and the wider town. From there, the books are easy to follow in publication order, with the novellas fitting between the larger stories if you want every extra stop in Garnet Run.
