In In the Middle of Somewhere, Daniel Mulligan leaves Philadelphia for a job at a small Northern Michigan college. Daniel is tattooed, sarcastic, and used to feeling out of place, both with his auto-mechanic family and among his former classmates. In Holiday, he meets Rex Vale, a shy, strong furniture maker who lives in a cabin and relies on routines to keep loneliness manageable. Their attraction is immediate, but both men have good reasons to keep people at arm's length.

The emotional stakes in Daniel and Rex's story do not come from a grand outside plot. They come from family secrets, fear of abandonment, class differences, and the difficulty of believing that someone might stay. Holiday matters because it gives Daniel a new kind of quiet, while Rex's cabin, cooking, woodworking, and local ties show him a life he had not pictured for himself.

Out of Nowhere shifts to Daniel's brother Colin. Colin works in the family auto shop, struggles with panic and anger, drinks too much, and has hidden that he is gay from everyone around him. Rafael Guerrera works in social justice and youth support, and he sees both Colin's pain and the risk of getting close to it. This is the heavier book in the series, with recovery, family harm, shame, and accountability at its center.

Then the story heads to New York.

In Where We Left Off, college-bound Leo Ware reconnects with Will Highland, the older, guarded man he has not managed to forget. Leo wants a committed relationship. Will insists that love is not for him. Their book has a more coming-of-age feel, but it stays rooted in the series' central question: can someone who has learned to protect himself risk wanting more?

These books are best read in order because the relationships and family history build from one title to the next. Still, each novel gives one couple a full arc.
