Series background & context

The Fractured Faery begins with confusion, violence, and a heroine who does not know whether she is the problem or the solution. Madrona wakes into a strange situation with amnesia, odd magical powers, and no clear idea of who, or what, she really is.

Manchester is not ready for her.

The opening book, Box of Frogs, throws Madrona into a mystery involving a corpse, bizarre attackers, and magic she cannot explain. She is not a neat, controlled heroine. She is strange, funny, alarming, and often as confused as everyone else. That gives the series a chaotic energy from the start.

As the trilogy continues, the story moves deeper into faery politics and danger. There are Fey brothers, possible apocalypses, plagues, firestorms, and more than one sign that Madrona's missing memories matter a great deal. The books keep asking a simple question with complicated answers: if you do not know your past, how do you know whether you are meant to save the world or wreck it?

The tone is wilder and more absurd than some of Harper's other series. It still has the urban fantasy ingredients readers expect, including supernatural factions, danger, romance, and a heroine with a sharp mouth. But Madrona's unstable sense of self makes the series feel more offbeat.

Read Box of Frogs, Quiver of Cobras, and Skulk of Foxes in order. The mystery of Madrona's identity and the rising magical stakes build across all three books, so this is not the best Harper series to read out of sequence.
