Series background & context

The Foxy Ladies Mysteries are playful cozy novellas set in Devil's Cove, the windswept coastal town from the Book Magic world. The sleuth at the center is Hattie Juniper Pickle, an older woman with colorful hair, a ragdoll cat named Carrot, a busy romantic history, and no interest in sitting quietly when something suspicious happens.

Hattie is joined by her longtime friends Maude, Cricket, and Lemon. Together, they call themselves the Foxy Ladies. They are curious, blunt, loyal, and perfectly willing to investigate a murder if the police are missing what matters. Their friendship is the engine of the series.

They are not subtle, and that is part of the fun.

In Love, Lies, and Lousy Exes, Hattie tries online dating only to have former husbands turn up at her door. Then a body is found beneath a historic tree, shifting the focus from romantic chaos to murder. Pippin Lane Hawthorne, Devil's Cove's bibliomancer, joins Hattie and her friends, connecting the novella to the Book Magic Mysteries without requiring readers to know that series first.

The Christmas follow-up, God Rest Ye Murdered Gentleman, brings the group into the town's holiday parade after a local curmudgeon is killed. The setup is festive, but the women still have a real puzzle to solve, with plenty of suspects, old personality clashes, and opportunities for the friends to trade jokes.

These are lighter, shorter mysteries that lean into the pleasure of spending time with a strong ensemble. The crimes are real, but the tone stays warm and comic. Hattie and her friends are not treated as background characters or reluctant grandmothers. They are active, funny women with histories, opinions, and a habit of getting results.

Start with Love, Lies, and Lousy Exes to meet Hattie, Carrot, and the Foxy Ladies. Then continue with God Rest Ye Murdered Gentleman for a holiday case that keeps the same friendship-forward spirit.
