Series background & context

The Forsaken books start with a kidnapping, but the real hook is the grudge underneath it. In The Forsaken King, Princess Ivory is taken by Mastodon, one of her father's guards, a man who believes her family destroyed his own. That gives the series its shape from the start. This is not a light court romance. It is a revenge story that keeps turning into something more complicated.

Ivory is the reason the books work. She is not meek, and she is not there to make anyone's life easy. Even in captivity she argues, resists, and keeps forcing the people around her to react to her instead of defining her. Mastodon is equally stubborn, but his anger comes from years of pain and a family history he cannot let go of. Their push and pull drives the first book and shadows everything that follows.

The setting is a rough, medieval feeling fantasy world of castles, cliffs, hidden caverns, and rival rulers. Power sits inside families, and so does cruelty. Barsetti keeps the focus close to the characters, so even when armies move and kingdoms matter, the pressure usually lands on trust, loyalty, humiliation, and desire. The romance is intense, but the politics are never far away.

Nobody gets an easy victory here.

By The Broken Queen and The Three Kings, the scope grows beyond one abduction and one private vendetta. Huntley, Ivory, and Queen Rolfe pull the story into marriage trouble, succession problems, and the threat of open war. The books stay interested in what happens after a grand declaration of love. Promises are broken. Families interfere. Old wounds keep reopening at the worst possible time.

That mix is what defines Forsaken. It reads like dark fantasy romance first, but it never forgets that crowns come with consequences. And the series likes testing love as much as creating it. Readers can expect enemies to lovers tension, possessive emotion, dangerous family politics, and a world where tenderness has to fight hard for space. If you like your romantasy messy, dramatic, and rooted in personal grudges rather than abstract quests, this series is very much playing your game.
