Series background & context

The Dirty Blood books bring vampires to the front of Barsetti's shared fantasy world, and they lean into the danger from page one. Bite the Woman That Feeds opens in human kingdoms ravaged by sickness. The heroine is one of the few people immune to the plague, which makes her useful, vulnerable, and suddenly valuable to everyone around her. Then she is handed over to Kingsnake, the vampire king, as part of a political bargain.

That setup tells you a lot about the series. These books run on captivity, obsession, hunger, and broken trust. Kingsnake starts as a threat before he ever becomes a love interest, and the heroine has good reasons to hate both him and the people who traded her away. The vampire mythology matters, but so do the politics between human kingdoms, the Teeth, and other powerful groups moving at the edge of the war.

Nothing stays simple for long.

The first three books, Bite the Woman That Feeds, Bite The Terror That Feeds, and Bite The Power That Feeds, follow that central relationship through lies, blood bonds, jealousy, transformation, and the search for a cure. They are dark fantasy romance in the most direct sense, intimate scenes, dangerous supernatural rules, and a couple trying to figure out whether desire can survive betrayal.

It is very much romance, but the war keeps getting bigger.

Then the series widens. The Forsaken Vampire, The Broken Prince, and Clash of Kingdoms shift to Princess Rolfe, also called Harlow, and the vampire pulled into her orbit after he is ordered to kidnap her. Those books connect more openly to the Forsaken side of the world and push the story toward wider conflict, with the Teeth, demons, and rival kingdoms all pressing in.

So if you want Barsetti at her most paranormal, this is usually the best place to start. The tone is dark, sensual, and openly dangerous, but there is still a lot of court maneuvering and family tension beneath the bloodlust. Readers who like possessive vampires, high heat, and fantasy plots that keep escalating from one couple's problem into a kingdom level crisis will feel at home here.
