Series background & context
Death starts on a bigger canvas than Forsaken. In The Death King, Talon arrives as a conqueror who rides a black dragon and commands the dead. The woman at the center of the story has already lost her kingdom to him and spent years in slavery because of that defeat. When she discovers she can speak mind to mind with dragons, the series shifts from simple revenge into something much larger.
That first arc follows Talon and Calista through dragons, old wars, elf politics, and the question of what his campaign is really for. The books move through Scorpion Valley, Riviana Star, and the Southern Isles, so the world opens wider with each installment. The dragons matter as characters, not just mounts, and the magic mixes necromancy, telepathy, plague, and old blood debts.
The scale keeps growing.
Even with all that fantasy machinery, the emotional center stays personal. Talon is powerful, but he is also scarred, secretive, and not easy to forgive. Calista has every reason to hate him, and the series never pretends that history disappears just because attraction shows up. Their relationship is built under pressure, with war plans, divided loyalties, and grief sitting in the room with them.
Then the series takes a smart turn. Beginning with Princess of Death, Barsetti jumps ahead twenty four years and follows Lily Rothschild, the daughter of Talon and Calista. Lily's books bring in a new kind of threat, the underworld, barbarian invasion, and a dangerous bond with the godlike figure first called Wrath and later known as Callum. The tone stays dark and romantic, but it adds more myth and more generational weight.
So if Death sounds like dragon romance, that is only part of the picture. These books are about power, inheritance, and the way old bargains keep reaching into the next generation. Expect dramatic battles, morally rough heroes, deeply loyal heroines, and magic that keeps raising the stakes. It is Barsetti at her most sweeping, with bigger landscapes and bigger consequences, but the same intense emotional pull.
