Forgotten Realms: Pathfinder Tales (Tim Pratt) Books in Order

Tim Pratt's Pathfinder Tales take place in Golarion, a world full of old ruins, competing faiths, mercenaries, magic, and cities that can be as dangerous as any dungeon. His books do not form one single storyline, but they share a quick, character-first approach to fantasy adventure.

There are two easy entry points.

City of the Fallen Sky and Reign of Stars are separate novels that send their characters into high-stakes magical trouble in different corners of Golarion. They are good choices for readers who want a self-contained quest, a strange threat, and a chance to explore the wider setting without committing to a long series.

The more directly connected sequence begins with Liar's Blade. It introduces Rodrick, a charming con man who has acquired Hrym, a talking magical sword with strong opinions and little patience for his owner. Their relationship is the heart of the trilogy. Rodrick wants to stay alive, keep ahead of trouble, and ideally become richer. Hrym wants him to behave like the hero he plainly is not.

The sword remembers everything.

Liar's Island and Liar's Bargain continue Rodrick and Hrym's misadventures as their past choices catch up with them. The books lean into scams, swords-and-sorcery action, and the friction between a man who would prefer to flee and a weapon that keeps insisting he take responsibility. The jokes matter, but so do the accumulated consequences.

Pratt also wrote shorter Pathfinder stories, including A Tomb of Winter's Plunder and Bastard, Sword. These offer compact visits to the setting and work well for readers who want more of his fantasy voice after the novels.

The tone across these books is adventurous, funny, and occasionally dark around the edges. Golarion supplies gods, monsters, and deep lore, but Pratt keeps the attention on people trying to get through the next impossible problem. His heroes are often clever rather than noble, and his magical objects tend to complicate life rather than solve it.
