Author bio
Tim Pratt was born in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and grew up in rural parts of the state, including Dudley. His mother loved reading, especially horror, and his great-grandmother kept a guest room stocked with science fiction and fantasy. Pratt read through both collections, then went looking for stranger books on his own.
He also spent plenty of time walking country roads, waiting for buses, and exploring nearby woods. Those early places still echo through his fiction, where everyday settings can suddenly open onto magic, monsters, old gods, or very bad decisions.
Pratt started sending stories to magazines as a teenager. He studied English at Appalachian State University, took a writing workshop with Orson Scott Card, and attended the Clarion Writers' Workshop in 1999. By then, writing had stopped being a side interest and become the job he wanted to build a life around.
After college, he moved to Santa Cruz, California, in 2000. The town and its coffeehouse culture fed directly into his first novel, The Strange Adventures of Rangergirl. It follows Marzi McCarty, a coffee-shop night manager and comic creator whose cowpunk western heroine starts bleeding into real life. It is funny, unsettling, and very interested in the power of stories people make for themselves.
Then came the range.
Pratt writes urban fantasy as T. A. Pratt, most notably the Marla Mason books. Marla is the hard-edged chief sorcerer of Felport, a woman who would rather solve a supernatural crisis than have a polite conversation about her feelings. Starting with Blood Engines, the series mixes magic, crime, monsters, and the lasting damage caused by every bad choice.
His work also moves easily into space opera. The Axiom novels, beginning with The Wrong Stars, follow the rough-around-the-edges crew of the White Raven as they uncover alien technology and face a threat to all sentient life. In Doors of Sleep, he takes a simpler but wonderfully unnerving idea, a man wakes in a different universe every time he falls asleep, and sees how far it can go.
Pratt has also written fantasy tie-ins for Forgotten Realms and Pathfinder, middle-grade espionage with Andy Deemer, and cosmic horror in the Arkham Horror setting. Short fiction remains a major part of his career. His story “Impossible Dreams” won the Hugo Award in 2007, while stories such as “Hart & Boot” and “Little Gods” show his fondness for odd premises, emotional turns, and worlds that feel larger than the page.
He has worked for Locus since 2001 and has served as a senior editor there. He lives in Berkeley, California, with his wife, Heather Shaw, and their son.
Across all those shelves, Pratt keeps returning to capable people facing impossible situations. They may have a talking sword, a broken starship, a city full of demons, or a coffee machine nearby. They still have to figure out what to do next.
