Series background & context

The Flesh series by Kylie Scott drops you into a zombie‑ravaged Australia where society has collapsed but people are still stubbornly, messily human. The books mix survival horror with very steamy romance, so expect high stakes in and out of bed.

The first novel, Flesh, follows Ali, who has spent weeks hiding in an attic while her neighbours turn into mindless, violent predators. When loner Daniel discovers her, he’s thrilled just to find another living person—especially a woman. Together they head out into the suburbs, trying to stay ahead of both the infected and desperate human gangs. Along the way they cross paths with Finn, a former cop whose instincts are to protect first and ask questions later. Attraction sparks between all three, turning their fragile alliance into a complicated, high‑heat relationship.

Skin shifts the focus to Roslyn, a former librarian trapped in a school with a small group of survivors. Food is running out when ex‑army survivor Nick shows up at the fence with supplies and an outrageous proposition: he’ll keep the group alive if Roslyn comes with him as his partner. What starts as an uncomfortable, even coercive bargain slowly becomes something more as they face external threats and have to decide whether they can actually trust each other.

Shorter stories collected in Flesh Series: Shorts—like Room With a View and What Trouble Is—show other pockets of survivors trying to carve out a life in the ruins. A woman stranded on a balcony watches the pool below fill with infected until a determined stranger fights his way back to her. A wary drifter and a British survivor meet at gunpoint and have to decide, very quickly, whether the other person is worth the risk.

Across the series, the setting feels tight and claustrophobic: suburbs overrun with zombies, barricaded apartments, abandoned schools, and wasteland roads patrolled by biker gangs. The tone is intense and erotic, but also surprisingly hopeful. People cling to small comforts—music, jokes, a warm shower—while working out new rules for love and loyalty when the old world has ended.

If you like your romance with bite marks, makeshift fortresses, and a lot of moral grey, the Flesh books give you a full, interconnected world to sink into.
