Series background & context

The Flashman Papers are presented as the discovered memoirs of Sir Harry Flashman, the school bully from Tom Brown's Schooldays grown into a notorious Victorian soldier. Fraser appears as the editor, complete with footnotes and dry asides, so the whole series feels like a mischievous historical hoax that somehow tells the truth.

At its heart is Flashman himself, a gifted horseman and linguist who is also a coward, a liar and a shameless rake, yet painfully honest when he writes about his own failings.

Each volume drops him into a real crisis of the 19th century and lets him blunder through it. In Flashman he survives the First Anglo Afghan War and the terrible retreat from Kabul. Royal Flash spins a Ruritanian kidnapping out of the 1848 revolutions in Europe. Later books send him from the Atlantic slave trade and the plantations of the American South in Flash for Freedom! to the trenches and cavalry charges of the Crimean War in Flashman at the Charge, and on into the bloodshed of the Indian Mutiny in Flashman in the Great Game.

The middle of the sequence widens the map still further. Flashman's Lady moves from Victorian cricket fields to Borneo piracy and the harsh court of Queen Ranavalona in Madagascar. Flashman and the Redskins links the California Gold Rush with the Indian Wars and the run up to Little Bighorn. In Flashman and the Dragon he is caught between the Taiping rebels and the Qing court during the Second Opium War, while Flashman and the Mountain of Light plunges him into the intrigue and battles of the first Sikh War and the fate of the Koh i Noor diamond.

The later books keep up that pattern of back channel history. Flashman and the Angel of the Lord makes him an unwilling witness to John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry, skirting the road to the American Civil War. Flashman and the Tiger gathers three shorter adventures that brush against the Treaty of Berlin, the royal baccarat scandal and even Sherlock Holmes. The final novel, Flashman on the March, finds him in Ethiopia during the 1868 Abyssinian expedition, juggling local queens, imperial politics and his own terror as usual.

Across all of them Fraser balances knockabout comedy with a serious respect for the record, using Flashman's selfish, often appalled commentary to show how empire, war and high politics look from the saddle. The books can be read in either publication or chronological order, and each stands alone, but taken together they build a sprawling, cross linked portrait of the Victorian world seen through the eyes of the least reliable hero imaginable.
