Adventures of Thomas Flashman Books in Order

The Adventures of Thomas Flashman series takes the basic pleasure of a historical rogue tale and shifts it into the Georgian and Napoleonic world. Thomas Flashman is the uncle of Harry Flashman, the better-known scoundrel from the later books by Thomas Hughes and George MacDonald Fraser. Like his nephew, Thomas is vain, self-interested, lustful, and forever trying to dodge pain, duty, and death. He is not quite the same man, though. Brightwell's version is still slippery, but often a little more human, which gives the books a slightly different feel.

The setup is simple and very effective. These novels are presented as Thomas's memoirs, so every campaign, scandal, and narrow escape comes through the voice of a man who wants to look impressive while also admitting just how frightened he usually was. That tension gives the series a lot of its charm. Thomas is always trying to save his own skin, but history keeps dragging him back into the line of fire.

Flashman and the Cobra moves into India and the Second Mahratta War. Flashman in the Peninsula and Flashman's Escape throw Thomas into the Peninsular War, where courage, blundering, and sheer bad luck all turn up together. From there the series keeps traveling: North America in Flashman and Madison's War, the last campaign against Napoleon in Flashman's Waterloo, South American independence struggles in Flashman and the Emperor, the Gold Coast in Flashman and the Golden Sword, Texas in Flashman at the Alamo, southern Africa in Flashman and the Zulus, and the frozen campaigns revisited in Flashman's Winter.

That wide map matters because the setting is never just wallpaper. Each book drops Thomas into a different kind of crisis, with different armies, local politics, and survival rules. Sometimes he is dealing with admirals and diplomats. Sometimes he is stuck with soldiers who barely know what they are doing. Sometimes he is trapped between imperial plans and the people expected to suffer for them. Brightwell likes those moments where official confidence collapses and ordinary chaos takes over.

The tone is fast, earthy, and often darkly funny. There are battles, seductions, prison breaks, bad orders, impossible missions, and a lot of frantic improvising. Thomas usually wants money, comfort, women, reputation, and a safe route home. Instead he gets military disasters, political schemes, wounded pride, and one near-fatal misunderstanding after another. That makes the books feel adventurous without turning Thomas into a spotless hero.

That tension is the engine of the series.

If you like historical fiction that stays close to real events but still moves like an adventure novel, this series is easy to sink into. It works best in publication order, starting with Flashman and the Seawolf, because the grudges, friendships, and accumulated wear on Thomas all carry forward. What you get is a long, restless tour through the early nineteenth century, seen by a man who would much prefer to be somewhere safer.
