Series background & context
Santino Hassell’s Five Boroughs series is a linked set of contemporary queer romances set across New York City. The main novels are Sutphin Boulevard, Sunset Park, First and First, Interborough, Concourse, Third Rail, and Citywide. Each book introduces a central relationship, but friends, relatives, coworkers, and former partners move through the larger series.
New York matters here. The stories travel from working-class Queens and Brooklyn neighborhoods to Manhattan penthouses, Bronx gyms, offices, clubs, and summer escapes. Differences in money, family history, race, work, and social comfort are often part of the romantic conflict. The city brings people together, then makes it difficult for them to avoid one another.
Sutphin Boulevard starts with Michael Rodriguez and Nunzio Medici, friends for two decades whose relationship changes after one impulsive night. Sunset Park follows Michael’s brother Raymond and David Butler, a seemingly unlikely pair trying to turn friendship and shared housing into a life together. First and First moves uptown with Caleb Stone and Oliver Buckley, two men shaped in different ways by wealthy, demanding families.
Later books revisit familiar people while widening the map. Interborough returns to Raymond and David after the rush of a new relationship has given way to school, work, insecurity, and daily compromises. Concourse centers on Ashton Townsend and amateur boxer Valdrin Leka, childhood friends from very different social positions. Third Rail and Citywide give supporting characters room to step forward, including stories about Chris, Jace, and Aiden, and several relationships tested during a brutal city heatwave.
These are character-driven romances with explicit content and a fair amount of emotional turbulence. The relationships can be tender, frustrating, funny, or painful, often within the same chapter. People make mistakes, carry old resentments, and struggle to believe they deserve the care being offered.
Start with Sutphin Boulevard if you want the strongest sense of the network forming around the characters. Several books can stand alone, but publication order helps the emotional payoffs land. Readers looking for urban romance with a close-knit cast, real-world pressures, and a strong sense of place will know what to expect.
