The world also sounds built for scale. Assassin training and princess training sit next to each other. Darkness itself feels active and dangerous. The ensemble around the leads matters, and the story seems interested in how both monsters and rulers try to claim ownership over other people's bodies and futures. With One Small Echo starting the arc and One Twisted Hymn continuing it, this is a series still building toward its bigger conflict.

So what should you expect? A dark fantasy with court control, monster bonding, and an enemies-to-lovers thread that stays sharp. If you want a softer romantic fantasy, this may be too harsh. If you want a series where war, bodies, power, and desire are all tangled together from page one, Shadowsong looks like one of Jane Washington's most ambitious worlds yet.
