Series background & context

At the heart of First Colony is Connor Gates, a soldier who expected punishment, not exile among the stars. In Genesis, he wakes from stasis aboard humanity's first interstellar colony ship and arrives on New Earth just as the colonists realize that starting over will be much harder than the planners imagined. The planet is dangerous, the chain of command is shaky, and almost every problem has to be solved with limited people, limited trust, and no easy way home.

New Earth is never just scenery.

What makes this series work is the way the colony's problems keep changing. Early on, the books deal with survival, settlement politics, military defense, and the simple fact that humans have landed on a world they do not really understand. Then the scope widens. Connor and the people around him uncover ruins, evidence of vanished civilizations, and signs that older wars are still shaping their future. Threats come from outside the colony, but also from inside it, where fear, ambition, and divided loyalties can do just as much damage.

Connor stays at the center, but he is not carrying the whole story alone. Sean Quinn, Diaz, Ethan Gates, and other recurring figures help the series feel like a real community under pressure. Some books lean harder into ship combat and military planning. Others are built around investigation, rescue missions, expeditions, or the uneasy work of forming alliances with people who do not fully trust one another. Later entries push farther from New Earth and deepen the larger conflict, but the books never forget that the stakes started with ordinary colonists trying to live through the next disaster.

The tone is military science fiction, but it is not only about battles. Lozito likes leadership problems, practical problem solving, and the emotional cost of holding a fragile society together. There is action, but there is also a steady focus on responsibility. Connor is often forced to choose between two bad options, and that sense of pressure gives the series its shape. Even when the setting gets bigger, the books keep returning to questions of loyalty, sacrifice, and what kind of future is worth defending.

If you like long space sagas that start with colonization and grow into something broader, First Colony has a lot to dig into. The best way to read it is in order, starting with Genesis, then Nemesis, then Legacy. From there the series keeps building, one crisis at a time.
